therefore also be expressed as “bread and bets”. In some cases, competitions
were even created for the sole purpose of giving wealthy gamblers an

Online Betting in Italy, a new betting leader ?

The amount of online and offline bets have increased by 12,9% to reach 1.7 Md€ from January to April 2010. Last year they were only of 1.4 Md€. As the world cup is nearing the numbers of bets increase in Italy.
The major italian operator Snai is confirming its lead with 582,3 M€ bet followed by Lottomatica with 359,2M€, Microgame (174,2€) and Sisal with 173M€.
As for online betting : Microgame is still leading the way with 28,3% of marketshares, followed by Lottomatica-Totosi that is eagerly taking market shares (25% in April 2010). The amount of online sports bets in Italy has also raised in April to reach 140,4M€ compared to 119 M€ last year.

The elections in the UK are a crazy time, when it comes to
betting. Everyone think they know who will win or at least wants to convince
themself they know who will. So there is a lot of betting going on...
However this year's set a new record with 40M$ that were bet on the election, according to the Washington Post. Election Betting usually start up to 1 month before the first round of the election and get more intense as the time of the election approaches. This amount is approxymatly twice the amount bet by other voters in other countries.
However, as you might have guessed elections' bets are not as popular as sport's bet. In some events such as the Grand National this month, 600M$ were bid ! But Football has nothing to be ashamed of and a first league championship has on average 15M$ bids ...

You just started betting online or off-line and you love it !
However it can sometimes get a bit confusing with all the new
vocabulary. Here is a little post to help you out :
Basic Vocabulary
- Bet : To risk money on the outcome of an event.
- Action : A sports' bet
- Ticket : A wager
- Private Bets : Bets organised in your home or in your office with people you already know. (colleagues-friends-friends' of friends)
- Office Bets (or Worker's Bets) : Bets in the office with colleagues.
- Tote or Parimutuel Betting is a betting system in which all bets of a particular type are placed together in a pool. Taxes and a house "take" or "vig" are removed, and payoff odds are calculated by sharing the pool among all winning bets. In some countries it is known as the Tote after the totalisator which calculates and displays bets already made.
During the Bet
- Chalk : the favorite of a sport event.
- Chalk Player : A better that always bets on the favorite.
- Square : An unexperience Better
- Underdog or in short form a Dog : A team not expected to win
- Longshot : A big underdog
- Push : A tie no winner or looser on a bet.
- Sharp : An experience Better
- Juice : A Bookies commission on a loosing bet.
- Future : A bet for a team or a player to win something in the long term (ex World Cup)

Guess what is one of the most popular form of betting in the UK ?
Private betting (betting with family, friends, colleagues,..) is very popular among the British population, according to the extremely serious NatCen – Gambling Commission “British Gambling Prevalence survey – 2007” : 10% of the population declared they took part at least one time in private betting in the last 12 months.
This figure is extremely high considering the population which declared gambling online on casinos is 3% of the population.. Still the most popular form of gambling is the lottery : According to the survey 52% of interrogated persons participated in the National Lottery over the past 12 months!
